Bobotie is a traditional South African dish with roots in Cape Malay cuisine, reflecting the fusion of Dutch and Southeast Asian flavours. This flavourful casserole features spiced minced meat, often mixed with dried fruit and topped with a savoury egg custard. Bobotie’s rich history and unique taste makes it a cherished staple in South African culinary traditions.

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 Onion, chopped

  • 2 tsp Crushed Garlic 

  • 1 Tbsp Curry Powder 

  • 2 Tbsp Oil 

  • 1 x 200 g IMANA Beef & Onion Flavour Super Soya Mince Packet

  • 3 cups Water

  • ½ cup Tomato Sauce

  • 60 ml Raisins

  • 1 Apple, grated

  • 1 Slice of Bread, cubed 

  • 1 Egg

  • ½ cup Milk

METHOD

  1. Preheat the oven at 180ºC.

  2. In a pot, fry the chopped onion, garlic and curry powder in oil until translucent. 

  3. Mix the IMANA Beef & Onion Flavour Super Soya Mince with the 3 cups of water in the same pot.

  4. Simmer until the sauce thickens.

  5. Stir in the tomato sauce, raisins, grated apple and cubed bread pieces into the pot and allow to simmer. 

  6. Place into an oven proof dish. 

  7. Beat the egg and milk together and pour over the mince. 

  8. Bake for 40 - 45 minutes.
